Lawrence Fair Food
|
Lawrence Fair Food (LFF) works in solidarity with the Student/Farmworker Alliance (SFA) and the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) to raise awareness about farmworkers struggles in the Lawrence Community, while demanding social responsibility in this country's global food system.
We coordinate film nights, creative actions (marches, street theater, readers theater, puppets, etc!), and meet with local organizations and schools to talk about fair food. LFF has been around since 2006, and has staged a number of actions and campaigns around the Lawrence community to expose the social justice issues behind the food we consume. Lawrence Fair Food is on Facebook. They usually meet Mondays at 7pm, rotating places.
The CIW website is www.ciw-online.org.

we work with – not for – farmworkers "A dozen years ago -- shortly before Christmas, 1997 -- a small group of farmworkers in Immokalee began a 30-day hunger strike that would forever transform the struggle for justice in this country's fields. Their excruciating month-long fast cast an unblinking light on the cruel reality facing tomato pickers -- slipping sub-poverty wages, rampant wage theft, and even violent modern-day slavery rings. But more than that, it also exposed the Florida tomato industry’s deeply-rooted, unregenerate resistance to dialogue with farmworkers and to improving farm labor wages and conditions." This small group of farmworkers grew into the successful community-based organization made up of Latino, Mayan Indian and Haitian migrant farmworkers known as the Coalition of Immokalee Workers.
