Lawrence Coalition for Peace and Justice

ECM participates in the Lawrence Coalition for Peace and Justice. This group, established by the Oread Meeting of Friends (Quaker) in 1976, is committed to promoting peace and justice in Lawrence and the world. Along with ECM, LCPJ has cosponsored forums on Iraq (The Hiroshima-Nagasaki Nuclear Bombing Commemoration), and Globalization. Meetings are held the second or third Sunday of the month at Plymouth Church, 925 Vermont St, in downtown, Lawrence. Check out more info at www.lcpj.org. ECM Receives the 1999 Tom and Anne Moore Peace and Justice Award given by LCPJ.ECM supported the Iraq vigils held in opposition to the war with Iraq. We also placed a sign outside of ECM that was signed by many. On October 7, 2003, the ECM Board passed a resolution in support of the resolution by the Lawrence Bill of Rights Defense Committee calling for the Lawrence City Commission and the Douglas County Commission to repeal the Patriot and Homeland Security Acts. ECM, LCPJ, Oread Friends (Quaker) and Peace Mennonite sponsored a two part series on the possibility of universal conscription being instituted:
In fall 2007, the banner "No War in Iraq: Not In Our Names" was displayed in front of Danforth Chapel on a weekly basis. Students also made sign in Fall 2006 protesting the use of torture. It was 4 X 15 feet and read, "Say NO to Torture." Thad Holcombe Is Honored with the 2011 Tom & Anne Moore Peace & Justice AwardApril 20, 2011. This year’s Tom and Anne Moore Peace and Justice Award of the Lawrence Coalition fo Peace and Justice went to Thad Holcombe, director of the Ecumenical Christian Ministries. "Thad has been the minister at KU’s ECM for twenty years. From the time of his arrival in Lawrence, he has been concerned to be open and welcoming to all people and to all ideas and faiths."
