| Big Brothers Big Sisters of Douglas County |
The mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Douglas County, Inc. is to promote the healthy development of children into adulthood through one-on-one mentoring relationships with caring adult volunteers. There are several program options for mentoring children with Big Brothers Big Sisters. Youth, Adults and Families are matched with children ages 5-17. The volunteers then spend 1-4 hours a week with their Little Brother or Little Sister. Volunteers must pass a screening process, which includes references, interviews, and background checks. |

| Boys & Girls Club of Lawrence |
The mission of the Club is to provide opportunities to boys and girls that will help them become contributing members of society. Volunteers can assist in many ways with building and ground maintenance and assisting staff with the afterschool and summer programs. Programs are located at the Main Site on Haskell Ave. as well as eight elementary schools and two junior high schools. These include Langston Hughes, Deerfield, Kennedy, Pinckney, Schwegler, New York, Woodlawn, Cordley, West Jr. High, and Central Jr. High. Volunteers are able to participate one on one with students as they help them with their homework, read a story with them or play board games. There are also opportunities for volunteers to actively engage in group games such as basketball, soccer, volleyball, dodgeball, and four-square. Other activities offered: cooking, photography, dance and cheerleading, technology lab, and field trips. |
