Statements from the ECM Executive Board:

The ECM board has agreed to publicly affirm and/or support the following:

  • Took a stand against the proposed coal power plants being built by Sunflower Electric Power Corporation in Holcomb, Kansas. Believes that these plants will poison Kansas' air and water to create energy of which 85% will be exported to other states. Advocates energy projects that fulfill Kansas energy needs, hold the health and well being of our citizens above all other considerations, and reflect Kansas' position as 3rd in the nation for potential wind energy.
  • Statements supportive of the teaching of evolution (PDF)
  • Joined the Kansas Equality Coalition which seeks to end discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity- also supported Simply Equal Campaign which addressed same issue and advocated an ordinance amendment for Lawrence- passed Lawrence City Commission
  • Endorsed resolution on Death Penalty Moratorium
  • Joined Coalition for Prosperous Kansas, in opposition to the Taxpayer Bill of Rights (TABOR)
  • Supported a proposal to Lawrence City Commission calling for Repeal of the USA Patriot, Patriot II and Homeland Security Acts and Directing the Police Department to Separate itself from Federal Implementation of the Patriot ACTS- passed Lawrence City Commission
  • Endorsed the "March for Sacred Site and Immigrant Rights" in Arizona
  • Immigrants Right resolution: We on the board of Ecumencial Christian Ministries at the University of Kansas call for fair immigration policies - not unfair targeting of immigrants as economic and security threats, an approach that the Minutemen actively pursue. We want our wider community to be known for peace and justice, not as a safe haven for violent tactics and racist ideology. Immigration issues should be handled through the established policy channels of a civil democracy, not by marginal vigilante groups that target a vulnerable population.
  • ECM supports the establishment of the Lawrence Community Shelter
